Autism and Health Workshops

What are the ‘Autism and Health’ workshops?  

These workshops are an interactive in-person event where we will unpack and discuss topics related to Autistic health. Community members are invited to attend these small group workshops (approx. 20-25 people per workshop) to gain a better understanding about the following topics:  

• The social and medical models of disability and Autistic culture. 
• Covid-19 and how the pandemic highlighted the inaccessibility of the healthcare system for Autistic people. 
• Barriers that Autistic people face in healthcare. 
• What is a Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) and how can they support you in a public hospital. 
• Sensory, social and information processing accommodations and adjustments that can be requested. 
• Health and wellbeing tips – what works well for the Autistic community and ideas for how you can stay well. 

Each workshop will be facilitated by an Amaze staff member and will include a Q&A discussion towards the end of each session.  

Who should attend this workshop?  

Autistic people who are looking to gain a better understanding of autism and health or those who’d like to be part of a community discussion on this topic are encouraged to attend. Parents/carers of Autistic people are also invited to attend as are health professionals who are looking to increase their knowledge about autism.

Where are these workshops held?  

These workshops will be held across metro and regional Melbourne over the first six months of 2024. We take careful consideration to choose autism friendly venues which are quiet, have natural lighting, wheelchair accessible and are in a central location with good parking and access to public transport. Where possible, a quiet room will be available for anyone who needs to step out. Alternatively, if a quiet room is not available, the venue will have an outdoor green space.
